The Principal of Makerere University’s School of Law will on Friday present one Student for the Award of a Doctorate of Laws(LL.D) the highest Academic Degree in the study of Law at the University’s 70th Graduation Ceremony. The rare achievement is due to none other than Adv. Benson Tusasirwe, a seasoned Lawyer, writer, researcher and Lecturer at the Prestigious Law School.

Benson becomes the second person to attain such an Academic Award as a direct result of study at the Law School. The first was Prof. Benson Kiromba Twinomugisha, a health law expert who is still a member of the Law Faculty. He attained his Doctorate in 2009.

Benson Tusasirwe publicly defended his Award late last year in October in a presentation of his Thesis titled  “ The Judicial Enforcement of the Right to Freedom of Political Assembly and Association.” He was Supervised by Prof. Joe Oloka Onyango and Prof Fredrick Jjuko – all scholars of global repute and members of the Law Faculty. Despite his retirement two years ago Prof Jjuko was retained on contract as the Faculty looks for his suitable replacement.

Benson Tusasirwe has a Bachelor of Laws, LL.B(Hons) from Makerere University and a Master of Laws from Cambridge University. We can now safely add the Doctorate of Laws(LL.D) from Makerere University.

He became a Member of the Makerere Law Faculty in 2001 and is attached to the department of Public and Comparative Law. He was also a Lecturer at the Law Development Centre where he taught Commercial Law and transactions.

He has researched and presented Papers on Constitutionalism and Governance, Corporate and Finance Law, Media Law, Education Law and Policy. He has also contributed several articles in Uganda’s Dailies. He currently teaches the Law of Contract to Undergraduate Students.

Benson also runs a Law Firm in Kampala – Tusasirwe and Company Advocates and has appeared in Ugandan Courts of Law on a wide range of Issues. Notably, he was among the Lawyers who represented then Presidential Candidate Dr Kizza Besigye in his 2001 Election Petition against President Yoweri Museveni.

A Doctorate of Laws is awarded on the basis of extensive, exceptional, insightful, distinctive and original publications and contributions to the study of Law.
