Dentons, one of the world’s largest law firms (by revenues and headcount) has announced the appointment of a new Managing Partner at its Uganda office starting 1st August, 2023.
Ms. Pearl Nyakabwa, a corporate lawyer who joined Kyagaba and Otatiina Advocates at its founding in 2019, a Ugandan law firm that was subsumed into the Dentons global brand replaces Mr. Denis Otatiina, one of the law office’s founding partners.
Before joining Kyagaba and Otatiina Advocates, Ms. Pearl Nyakabwa worked as an Associate Partner at Kampala Associated Advocates (KAA) and as an Associate at Byenkya, Kihiika & Co Advocates – both leading law firms in Uganda.
In her role as Managing Partner, Pearl Nyakabwa will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of the law firm which counts several large companies including MTN Uganda, Nile Breweries, etc – among its clientele.
Ms. Nyakabwa will also continue to head the law firm’s banking, finance, and energy law practice teams, the firm said in the announcement.
According to Mr. Noor Kapdi, the CEO of Dentons Africa, the appointment of Ms. Pearl Nyakabwa as Managing Partner of Dentons Uganda “exemplifies our commitment to nurturing and promoting talent from within our ranks and we are confident that she will excel in her new position.”
The appointment of Pearl Nyakabwa, a lawyer who Dentons describes as one with “particular experience in oil and gas having served as in-house legal counsel on secondment at an international Oil and Gas major which is the operator of an oil and gas project in Uganda ” coincides with at least two other high-level appointments at top law firms involving lawyers engaged in the energy sector – a promising industry for lawyers as Uganda makes steady strides in the sector.
Kampala Associated Advocates (KAA) last month admitted an energy law expert from the government into its large partnership as part of its ‘strategic positioning’ and this month ABMAK Associates also appointed a big-time energy lawyer as its new Managing Partner.
Ms. Pearl Nyakabwa, in a post on her LinkedIn, said she looks forward to “fortifying our position as a leading law firm in Uganda by continuing to prioritize excellent client service.”
