Lawyer gets 6-months suspension from legal practice over client’s money

The disciplinary committee of the law council, the regulatory watchdog of the legal profession in Uganda, earlier this month suspended a lawyer from practicing law for a period of 6 months, according to a notice to courts of law by the Judiciary Chief Registrar, Ms. Sarah Langa.

Ms. Beatrice Basemera Butime, who has practiced law with Basemera & Associates Advocates for the last 14 years and is wife to tourism minister, Col ( Rtd) Tom Butime was suspended after the law council found she could not account for a client’s money.

Ms. Beatrice Basemera’s suspension comes just two months after the High Court confirmed the suspension of a prominent lawyer Mr Godfrey Nangumya for 16 months after he fleeced a client of about 59M Uganda Shillings.
