President Kaguta Museveni has tapped one of his go-to lawyers Mr. Kiryowa Kiwanuka to be Uganda’s Attorney General in his fresh cabinet picks announced Tuesday evening.

Advocate Kiryowa Kiwanuka replaces Advocate William Byaruhanga, Senior Counsel, who was dropped entirely from the Cabinet and hasn’t been redeployed yet.

Mr. Kiryowa Kiwanuka will be deputised by Hon. Jackson Kafuuzi who retained the post.

An unapologetic supporter of the ruling NRM party, Mr. Kiryowa Kiwanuka is a founding partner of city Law firm K&K Advocates which he founded in 2001 together with President Museveni’s son-in-law Edwin Karugire.

“KK” as he is popularly known in legal circles is a talented litigation lawyer who recently cut his teeth in the emerging petroleum law practice field. Presently, he sits on the first 7- member board of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda.

Kiryowa Kiwanuka has appeared for and argued numerous court cases and other legal matters involving President Yoweri Museveni and his party NRM.

Notably, Mr. Kiryowa Kiwanuka successfully defended the President’s re-election in 2016 following a Supreme Court challenge mounted by then Presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi.

The O-shaped lawyer whose interests extend beyond legal practice into golf and football was also President Museveni’s lawyer in this year’s presidential election petition which ended before it started after Museveni’s lead challenger withdrew the case from the Supreme Court.

Kiryowa Kiwanuka represented NRM in a constitutional court challenge in which 11 Members of Parliament sought to overturn the party’s endorsement of President Museveni’s sole candidature.

As Attorney General, the current chairman of Express FC in Uganda’s Super league, will be Government’s Chief legal advisor charged with representing the government in all civil court cases and other legal proceedings to which government is a party.

Mr. Kiryowa Kiwanuka will also be responsible for the drafting and perusal of agreements, contracts, treaties, conventions and documents involving the government or its interests.

A contract involving the government can not be concluded without the legal advice of the Attorney General.
