President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has elevated three Court of Appeal judges to the Supreme Court, increasing the number of judges in the under-staffed apex court to 11, according to a leaked letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among announcing the picks.

In the same appointment, President Museveni rewarded another of his personal attorneys, Mr. John Oscar Kihika with the coveted designation as a Court of Appeal judge, arguably making him the first Ugandan Lawyer in recent history to jump from private legal practice straight to the second most powerful court in the country.

The newly appointed were Friday, 18th November vetted by the Parliamentary Appointments committee chaired by Speaker Anita Among.

The Court of Appeal Judges promoted to the Supreme Court are: Justice Elizabeth Musoke, Justice Christopher Madrama and Justice Stephen Musota.

Oscar Kihika’s appointment as a Court of Appeal judge comes a year after President Museveni appointed Kiryowa Kiwanuka as Attorney General.

The two lawyers and their law firms have represented the President in several legal matters including Presidential election petitions against him.

At the time of his appointment, Kihiika has been the legal director in President Yoweri Museveni’s political party, NRM.

Story updated to correct that Supreme Court Judges are to increase to 11 not 13

Article Updates in Paragraph 2 to reflect Oscar Kihiika is arguably the first Ugandan Lawyer in recent history to be appointed straight from private legal practice to the Court of Appeal
