Four Remanded Over Vehicle Thefts In Hoima

The Hoima Grade One Magistrates court has remanded three suspected masterminds of vehicle thefts in Bunyoro region to Kiryateete government prisons.

The suspects are Julius Byamukama, 25 years, John Tindyebwa, 19 years, and Bernard Tumusiime.

The trio appeared before the Court on Monday, 16th January, 2023 and was charged with two counts of vehicle theft and being in possession of vehicle-breaking implements.

The Prosecution told the Court presided over by Elijah Iradukunda, the Hoima Principal Grade One Magistrate that between December 2022 and January 2023, while in Hoima City, the suspects were intercepted with a suspected stolen Toyota Wish vehicle registration number UBB 533X.

The Prosecution also told the Court that the suspects were found with several vehicle-breaking implements, which included hammers, pliers, pair of scissors, and sharp metals.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Prosecution told the court that investigations are still ongoing.

This prompted Iradukunda to remand the suspects to Kiryateete Government prisons until January 18th, 2023 when they will re-appear before the Court for the hearing of their case. 

The same Court remanded Moses Tugume, 25, a resident of Kinubi cell in Hoima East Division Hoima city over aggravated vehicle robbery and theft. 

Court heard that on December 13, 2022, while in Kyarushesha village in Butoole parish, Kyangwali sub-county in Kikuube district, the suspect together with others still at large stole a Premio vehicle registration number UAW 760F valued at 20 million Shillings belonging to John Tumushabe, a resident of the same area.      

Prosecution led by Julius Ochen also told the Court that on December 20, 2022, the same suspect together with others still at large while in Kitole village in Buhimba sub-county, Kikuube district while armed with machetes robbed another Toyota Premio vehicle registration UAT322/G valued at 20 million Shillings from Emmanuel Businge.

The Suspect was charged with aggravated robbery and theft of a vehicle contrary to section 285(1) of the Penal Code Act.

He too pleaded not guilty to the offense and was remanded to Kiryateete Government Prison until January 25th, 2023 when he will reappear for the hearing of his case.

Thefts of vehicles in the Bunyoro sub-region have become rampant.  

Statistics from the Albertine regional police headquarters indicate that nine vehicles were stolen in the region from December 2022 to January 2023.  

These include Premio UAT 322G, which was stolen from Kitoole village in Kikuube, Premio UAW 760F Premio – which was stolen from Kyarushesha in Kikuube, UAJ 764S -Toyota Corona, which was stolen from Hoima City, UAU 342B Toyota Premio – that was stolen from EDPA medical center in Hoima City, UAX 409U Toyota Premio – that was stolen from Nyangahya village in Masindi district and UBB 533X Toyota Wish that was stolen from Hoima city among others.
